INTERVIEWS, REVIEWS, CULTURE PIECES, MUSICAL RAMBLINGS.
I'm making it a mission of mine to scout out really new bands that only have a couple songs, or a very small fanbase that's on the verge of blowing up. In case they blow up, I want to be with them through that journey so I can truly say I've been there since the beginning. Here are some new songs I recommend for a new, fresh, 2017 sound! I was watching an Instagram livestream one day (forgot which one) and I noticed a comment by Early Eyes. I followed them and listened to this song a couple days ago. I really like the warmness and chillness it portrayed and it's definitely a song for those lazy days where you're too cold to function. This is their first recording, and they have some live vids on YouTube so I'm hoping for more of those live videos in this year! Okay, I know. Andrew McMahon isn't new at all, he's been around for a while. But, he's been releasing singles like crazy such as this Twenty One Pilots meets Bastille jam and my other favorite, So Close. He toured with Panic and Weezer, and I'm surprised he didn't receive more attention for that. Fire Escape's been playing a lot lately on various Sirius XM stations, so I have a feeling 2017 is gonna be Andrew's year. If it wasn't for having this song on repeat during studying for my Spanish 2 final, I don't think I would have been able to calm down and focus as much as I did. First of all, The Happy Children are a really adorable band. I follow them on Insta and Twitter and I listened to their EP on Bandcamp, and they just seem like really chill guys and would be like your crazy older cousins that let you in on their beer pong game. If I'm not mistaken they even had a party in MN on Friday to celebrate their new single! This video is really cute, too. It makes me want to take my GoPro out, gather my friends, and explore the world. I can feel 2017 will be a great year for them with their talent and successful gigs. Please support them by checking out their album! If you guys read this week's Vibe and Review, you know all about my love for The Fontaines. They're on their way to Indie-fame, let me tell you. They were mentioned on Buzzfeed. That's a great start, y'all.
Honestly, that's all I have so far. It's too early to tell, really. And when I get obsessed with bands, I basically live and breathe them for a couple months, so don't expect a huge variety. Quality over quantity, people. Anyway, please do whatever you can to support and boost these great artists because they all deserve it!

So one of my new favorite breakout bands is The Fontaines, the most adorbs brother-sis duo ever. I've followed Hank Fontaine on Instagram for a while, but I never got around to listening to his stuff. THEY ARE REALLY GOOD! So, I decided to make the first V&R of the year their first EP/album thingy. It only has four songs, but sometimes short and sweet is the best.
The Cover - (New year, new segment. I'm analyzing the cover art first thing.) Okay, it looks like they're near a beach or something. I like the glass table colliding with the colorful graffiti in the back. It looks like the perf Instagram photo-op. Also, their outfits are SO CUTE AND I WANT THEM BOTH SO BADLY. What I'm getting from this is that the album is going to be really bright, crisp, and pure, and hopefully make me feel like I'm on a beach. PLEASE, I NEED A BEACH RIGHT NOW. EXAM WEEK IS COMING. 1. Cold - This song is jittery, in a good way. Like, just the right amount of coffee in the morning. This song's summery feel really warms me up in the middle of January and takes me back to Venice Beach in July. Normally I don't like when people go "woah oh oh", but Charlotte's voice is so aesthetically perfect HOW COULD I HATE IT???????? This is honestly the perfect summer festival jam, and I think it was the fast-paced drums that captured it beautifully and made me want to run back into the season. 2. Handstand - This song was how I discovered that they actually had music out, through a Buzzfeed playlist. When this song first came on, I was transported to a club in NYC. The Fontaines were preforming this song on stage, and there were velvet red curtains everywhere. It's such a polished and medium speed song, which is why I think I hallucinated that. It's perfect for winding down and relaxing on a lawn somewhere. It's understandable why Buzzfeed put this on a "Songs You Need For January" playlist. It's breezy vibe is a fresh breath of air, with a noticeable difference compared to the Alt music out today. 3. Please, Say Something - Oh no, here come the feels. This is one of those songs that make me feel like I'm in a love triangle, even though I don't think I've been that close to a boy since 8th grade. I really liked how this song showcased the vocals, because she is a really. Great. Singer. Like, one of the best new female singers this year. I'm not exaggerating. Excuse the New York slang, but I'm deadass. I really felt like I was witnessing this crumbling relationship just because of the emotions in her voice. That imagery is crucial for a sad song and makes me love them even more. 4. I Love You - One of the things I totally forgot to mention until now is that this whole album belongs in a peppy, Grease-style musical live TV movie. This song especially. Like, it had all the elements. A beat that makes you extremely happy about life in general and just puts you in a good mood when you need it. It just was perfect and made me want to fall in love. And dance around with that person. Maybe a dog. That's the closest I'll ever get. But yeah, any future musical directors, I point you in the direct of The Fontaines. In conclusion, my predictions from the cover were spot on. I felt like I was in Florida for fifteen minutes and now I miss it. I really hope these guys really break out because the world deserves to hear them, and hopefully regain hope in indie-pop (if they even were losing it in the genre at all)! Their sound is really different, and guys, if you see this, COME TO NEW YORK ASAP!!!!! Many of my friends always joke about how I have EXTREMELY specific places i want to live in when I grow up. This sounds good, this sounds like I have a general idea of what I want to do with my life.
That assumption is totally wrong. The thing is, I have MULTIPLE things I want to be when I get older. I'll list some of them here, so enjoy. It's finally the weekend! To celebrate my short-but-treasured break from school, I slept in until 11am and then watched a movie I remembered I taped before going away to Lake George with Liah. This movie was broadcasted on MTV Live the other day, and it's called Glastopia. I taped it thinking it was going to give me a backstage look of all of the acts there, but I really couldn't have been more off. |
