MRIs aren't fun. We all know it. I had an especially eventful one a few days ago. Here's the story of the scariest, most stressful MRI of my life. So, first of all, I had to wear possibly the ugliest pants in the world since my jeans had metal on them. Here's a mirror selfie from after the MRI (I'll explain everything later) Then, they had to take blood. That was awful. I hate the feeling of anything going into my body. That was over quick, though, but when they actually put the tube in me it HURT. At the last MRI I had, they didn't do a tube, so I didn't really know what if was supposed to feel like. Anyway, I went back to where my mom was sitting and instantly had a mini panic attack. "Liah, it's fine!" "IDONTLIKEITIDONTLIKEITIDONTLIKEIT" Before I could say anything else, Kevin, the best person ever, led me back to the monitor room. The doctors were blasting The Weeknd and chatting and having a good time. I felt calm despite the awful, stinging pain in my right arm. Kevin left and Lily led me to the MRI room. I laid back on the MRI table and Orquedia tested my IV to see if it was in right. In conclusion, after lots of nearly-crying from me, it wasn't. They tried another place on my right arm, but again failed. They had to call in Kevin. Kevin, my favorite person ever, came to the back room and calmly inserted an IV into my left arm. It worked! After that fiasco was over, Orquedia asked me what music I wanted to listen to. I asked if it was Pandora, and it was. After five seconds of indecision, I decided that I wanted to listen to the Strokes because it was a nice summer day in New York and what else would I listen to? Also, whatever I listened to would be broadcasted to the doctors in the first room, so I couldn't listen to anything too weird, but I still had to impress them with what I listened to. It was all chill at first. I was listening to some Julian Casablancas song that I don't remember the name of. They were telling me when to breathe and not breathe. It smelled like bagels. The next song was weird, and I honestly don't even remember what it was. Suddenly, my right arm started twitching like crazy. I looked up at the ceiling of the MRI tube and pretty much hallucinated a kaleidoscope from fear and blood loss. My left arm, where the tube was, started to sting too. But then, there was a moment. Through the horribly crackly headphones, I heard a voice say 'take me out' really quietly. Was it Kevin? No. I heard some guitars start up and quickly realized it was a live version of Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out. I nearly started crying and I whisper-sang to the ceiling of the MRI tube. It was a blessed moment. "You're going to feel a cold rush in your arm in about two minutes, okay?" I accepted that fact and continued silently jamming out while the kaleidoscope continued wherever I looked. The cold rush was EXTREMELY COLD. And it happened just as the riff changed in Take Me Out. It was probably the most intense moment of my life. I felt like everything was ending. I was getting dizzy. I had to close my eyes because I couldn't focus on anything. The MRI ended shortly after that as the Strokes' Automatic Stop played in the headphones. The only problem was I couldn't move my arms, hence why my left arm was FULLY EXTENDED in the mirror selfie. My right arm still hurts. Ow. Anyway, I've always been a believer in the theory that music really changes a situation. Without any music playing in that MRI I'm sure I wouldn't have been as calm as I was (barely calm at all!).
That's really all I have to say. Sorry for being so behind on posting, by the way! I'm experiencing some serious writer's block and also my arm still hurts, which is unrelated but still important. Stay cool.

Hot Hot Heat, the band that did extremely well in the 2000s and then dropped off the face of the earth. Hot Hot Heat, the band that played on Yo Gabba Gabba when I was a kid and pretty much made my childhood. Hot Hot Heat, the band that released one final album and silently disappeared.
Thank you, Hot Hot Heat, for all the jams over the years. I can't count the times I've danced around to Bandages and Goodnight Goodnight in my kitchen after school. I can't count the times I've listened to Kid Who Stays In The Picture on long drives this summer. Hot Hot Heat, I'd like to thank you for an awesome seventeen years. I'm proud of you. 1. Favorite song: At the moment, it's SOS In Bel Air by Phoenix, but my all time favorite songs are Stand On The Horizon by Franz Ferdinand, South by Hippo Campus, Breakin' Point by Peter Bjorn and John, The House That Heaven Built by Japandroids, Kid Who Stays In The Picture by Hot Hot Heat, and Midnight On The Hill by Maxïmo Park.
2. Least favorite song: I don't have one, because I always know there will be something worse. 3. A song that makes you happy: Always Where I Need To Be by The Kooks. 4. A song that makes you sad: The Writing's On The Wall by Ok Go. I don't even know why. 5. A song that reminds you of someone: Obstacle 2 by Interpol. 6. A song that reminds you of somewhere: Ocean Breathes Salty by Modest Mouse. It reminds me of Portland, Maine. 7. A song that reminds you of a certain event: Midnight On The Hill by Maxïmo Park. It reminds me of running off into my backyard on a really bad day in the summer and catching fireflies. Things I Won't Get by FFS reminds me of when I was listening to it on a boat and we almost got crushed by another, bigger boat. It really puts life into perspective, yknow? You might not see that giant boat coming to destroy you. On a much lighter note, Threat Of Joy by The Strokes reminds me of when I met Alli. 8. A song you will always know the words to: Always On My Mind by Phantom Planet. 9. A song you can dance to: I can't dance. I dance like a suburban dad at a barbecue. I dance like 2015 Alex Kapranos. No. 10. A song you can fall asleep to: Leave This Island by Maxïmo Park. 11. A song from your favorite band: Stop making me pick favorites, it makes me feel bad. 12. A song from a band you hate: Doubt by Twenty One Pilots. It's a killer song, but I hate the band. 13. A song that reminds you of someone you hate: Technicolor Eyes by Backseat Goodbye. I love the song, but it reminds me of a guy I liked in middle school who turned out not to be the nicest. 14. A song that nobody would expect you to love: Hellabuster by Box Codax. 15. A song that describes you: Someone once said that Panic Station by Muse describes me pretty accurately. 16. A song that you used to like but now you hate: 1997 by Saint Motel. Thanks, Alli. 17. A song you often hear on the radio: Alternative song? Mr Brightside by The Killers. 18. A song you wish you heard on the radio: I don't listen to the radio, so I don't care, but if there's one song I want everyone in the world to listen to, it would probably be Fresh Strawberries by Franz Ferdinand. I think some people really need that message. 19. A song from your favorite album: Meet Me In The Bathroom by The Strokes. Room On Fire could kill me and I wouldn't mind. I love that album. 20. A song you listen to when you're angry: I Won't Come Back by Box Codax. And then I try to copy Fancy Andy's dance moves. That is the most iconic music video. 21. A song you listen to when you're content: My Heart Beats 4 U by Rooney. Would be better without the '4 U' thing, but this song is so chill and I love it. 22. Both are songs I love with all my heart and totally want people to associate my life with. 25. A song that makes you laugh: A Quick Peep by Oasis (HAHAHAHAHAHA PEEP) 26. At The Disco. 32. Your favorite love song: Eleanor Put Your Boots On by Franz Ferdinand. It's so sweet. And then I start crying because I remember Alex and Eleanor broke up in 2006(?) and love is dead. 33. A song you never get sick of hearing : The Dark Of The Matinee by Franz Ferdinand. 34. A song that reminds you of a sibling: My siblings hate everything I listen to. 35. A song you find annoying: none?? idk 36. Your favorite rap song: Does Macklemore count???? I don't listen to any rap. I listened to Nelly a lot in seventh grade, because it was an inside joke (hey Campbell) so I'll just say Number 1 by Nelly. 37. Most listened to song on your iTunes: That feature has sadly disappeared from my phone, but last time I checked, it was Evil Eye by Franz Ferdinand, so let's just go with that. 38. A song you would perform in front of people: Jacked Up by Weezer for vocals, Books From Boxes by Maxïmo Park for guitar. 39. Favorite song from the 90s: The 90s were an iconic decade for music. My favorite song from them is-- Yeah. It's Buddy Holly by Weezer. That song's one of Weezer's most popular songs, but it's still iconic and I still love it. Sorry. 41. Favorite song from the 2000s: WHY ARE YOU MAKING ME CHOOSE?! Anyway, probably Our Velocity by Maxïmo Park. About sums up the decade. 42. A song you hate but listen to anyways: 1997 by Saint Motel. 43. A song that gives you a rush (eargasm): I'm not really sure what this means??????? Or if I've ever experienced one?????? 57. A song with lyrics you don't understand: Say Hello To The Angels by Interpol?? 59. A song with no words: Voyager by Daft Punk 60. Favorite singer/songwriter song: Cola by Backseat Goodbye. I know I always say that I listen to 'pretty much anything that has guitar,' but I often listen to songs for lyrics. Anyway, be ready to read me gushing about my favorites.
So in no particular order, here are my favorite lyrics of all time. When I was twelve years old, I received my first ever posters for Christmas. They were of two of my favorite bands, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand. Until then, I'd put up pixelated photos of Daft Punk printed from my school's computer lab to fill the empty void where posters of baby animals used to be. I was proud of those printed photos. They were pretty important to me. My parents have told me to take my posters down before, which I understand, I mean, I totally could do something cool with my wall, but I've never actually done it. Posters are a very teenage girl sort of thing, because teenage girls tend to obsess over things. My mom's teenage obsession was this band called Menudo, who were basically a Puerto Rican One Direction. I hadn't heard of them before my dad brought them up as a joke at dinner one night during the height of my Franz Ferdinand phase, but man, I don't think I'll ever get Vamos A La Playa out of my head. These strange and spontaneous obsessions give a sense of security, at least if you were me in 2014. When there were no decent guys at your school, you fell for the guitarist of that band you liked. When your friends excluded you, you turned to this band, this group of friends making music together, and somehow, strangely, they made you feel better. You may have been ridiculed for it, or bullied by some mean girls at school, but that one strange thing that you loved was so important to you that you felt hurt by it. But let me tell you, twelve and thirteen year old girls of planet earth, if that thing makes you happy, no one deserves to put you down for it. No one. Anyway, back to the posters. I'm pretty sure my Franz Ferdinand poster resided in the basement of a record store for twelve years before it ended up in a box at my front door. Besides the huge gash, which is thankfully barely noticeable against the black background, it's covered in dents, a couple rough patches, some minor and barely visible yellow discoloration, and I'm not kidding, a kiss mark over Nick McCarthy's head. So, yeah. That thing's probably been through World War One (haha, crappy Franz Ferdinand joke, although the man himself didn't make it through the war!). That poster is THE WORST. LIKE LITERALLY THE WORST. It's fallen on me in the middle of the night while I was sleeping so I had to spend ten minutes of my night fixing it, fallen on me in the middle of the day, fallen just as I walked into my room (cue the deep sigh), scared my cat so bad she wouldn't come into my room for days, and that thing was even on the floor just when I got home from Florida. So, when my dad woke me up at 8:00 AM one day and told me to takedown my posters since we were painting my room, my first thought was this: I knew my Franz Ferdinand poster would be impossible to keep up. I didn't want to take it down, but I did, because my room was ugly and painting it a lovely shade of periwinkle would really make it look better. Anyway, two days later I had to put my posters up again, and I knew that my Franz poster would fall on me within minutes of it being on the wall with just tape or *shudders* mounting putty. Let me tell you about mounting putty. If you don't know what it is, it's that gooey stuff you always thought was gum that teachers used to hang up your artwork in first grade. Look at this. EWWWW. iI AM... DISGUSTED.
Yeah. Mounting putty. *deep sigh*. My mom bought it for me in 2014 when I put all of my drawings on my wall so I wouldn't damage them. I tried to hang my Franz poster up with it, and that obviously didn't work. I needed a new way to hang my posters. Tape didn't work. Mounting putty obviously didn't work. Command strips almost destroyed my Arctic Monkeys poster. But then I found them. Mounting squares. I don't really know how to describe them. They're there little sticky squares that you attach to stuff, I guess? Anyway, I knew they'd work on my Franz poster. I had a feeling. I probably put about eight around the sides, and it's been a week and it hasn't fallen yet. Wow. That must be a new record. Archaeological digs are strange, exciting adventures. Sometimes you find dinosaur bones, other times you find one of George Washington's horses' horseshoes, and other times you find things like old bottlecaps, golf balls, and the remnants of your sandbox.
But today, my lovely friend Sophia (hey there!!) found her third grade (that's year 4 for you British peeps, and I was 8 for all you other peeps) Coke Or Pepsi book. If you didn't know, Coke Or Pepsi was THE THING in my New Jersey elementary school. Girls would go around at lunch yelling "DOGS OR CATS? GIRLY OR TOMBOY?" at their friends, and if you weren't asked, you were a total loser. Anyway, my answers really said a lot about me then. I don't really know how this alternative rock obsession happened, but I know I was a lot different then. Here are my answers. What r your top 3 fave bands? 1. All Star Weekend 2. Big Time Rush 3. Selena and the Scene What r your top five fave songs? Come Down With Love is perfect to dance to. Play My Music is great to sing with. Dynamite has the coolest lyrics. I NEVER like all of the songs. Just when I was about to give up on past me, though, I found my Puppy Or Kitten book, which said that my favorite song was Magic by B.O.B and Rivers Cuomo! Yeah, Rivers Cuomo! The lead singer of Weezer, who I've met and seen in concert. At least I have some faith in past me. When I was in third grade, I hadn't even heard my first Weezer song yet. Apparently, at a school dance, Third Grade Liah would also prefer a live band over a DJ, and would also ask her crush out instead of waiting. I also would either want to be the lead singer or guitarist. In that sense, not much has changed. Third Grade Liah also apparently loved the spotlight and would rather be able to dance than play an instrument. Also, I would have named my band "The Hot Tigers." Maybe more has changed than I thought. Yeah. A lot has changed, and definitely in a good way. |
About The AuthorLiah is a high school senior who plays guitar and loves the color yellow. She doesn't post much, but when she does, it's awesome. We promise.
