I Liah, was once well known as a hater of classic rock. Fascinating, isn't it, seeing how far I've come? It all started when I wrote an essay on how Indian music shaped the British Invasion. Actually, wait a sec. It started before then. It started in the summer before 7th grade. I had just escaped the Daft Punk fandom (I know, I know. That's a story for another time) and realized there were three places to go: 1. Classic rock 2. Indie/Alternative 3. Further into EDM Subconsciously, I chose indie/alternative, but I decided to try out classic rock to see if I liked it. I listened to two songs. Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. I'm not sure actually whether I liked them or hated them, but now whenever they come on I know all of the words and get crazy vivid flashbacks of driving to Pennsylvania. I then gave up on classic rock until 2016 when I started listening to David Bowie and an occasional Queen song. I though classic rock was too old, I couldn't relate to it, and it would be an embarrassment if my dad found it on our iTunes account. But ok, wait. This is where it gets crazy. I was assigned the task of studying how Indian music impacted on the British Invasion for a 5-7 page essay in my history class. I was up to the challenge. I fought to keep my topic the way it was: the Beatles, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones. Although I learned a lot about the 1960s as a decade and how the music industry was at the time, I think honestly the most valuable thing I learned was that I actually don't hate classic rock, and the Kinks are probably one of my favorite bands. Let's get into what I love about them. Favorite Member?Dave Davies! He's an awesome guitarist, and is somehow better at social media than I am. He plays a Flying V, which is crazy, because I had to play one once and was nearly stabbed to death by it (it was half my size and stabbed my leg) (hey Riley). He is also the reason the Kinks were banned from the US, because he got in a mid-gig fight with drummer Mick Avory that ended up with Dave getting stitches at the local hospital and Mick going into hiding. Not cool. Actually, it's pretty cool. Favorite Song? This prestigious award has to go to The Village Green Preservation Society, Destroyer, or This Time Tomorrow. I'm not going to individually link those songs because there are so many more amazing Kinks songs on this handy dandy little playlist! Have fun with that. I'll be off having fun playing You Really Got Me and All Day And All Of The Night on guitar. If you want to see those covers and more, check out my Instagram here: I know, my username's quite the thing.
Happy listening, and I'll see you guys soon!
